Chillisoft and Habanero, a history (part 1)

Once upon a time there was a language called Visual Basic 6. This language, being only the sixth version put out by Microsoft and being released in the 20th century (1998 to be specific), did not have this newfangled idea called inheritance. In a feat of semantic gymnastics, Microsoft managed to called Visual Basic 6 “Object-based”, but the astute among you will realise that this is a far cry from “Object Oriented”.

Habanero weeks away!

Chillisoft’s new Habanero architecture has been a work in progress for a few years now. When it was clear at the time that there were deficiencies in existing object-relational mapping (ORM) products that could map databases to object-oriented code, Chillisoft decided that it would develop its own product. Rather than hammer away at a new product on the spot, Habanero has been developed along with our standard client projects. While the launch time has obviously been a little slower, the advantages of this approach have been clear.

First of all, Habanero is relevant to market needs, because it’s been used by programmers in a real-world setting to deliver real-world projects. As soon as necessary functionality was missing, we added it. Secondly, it’s a well-tested product, void of many typical launch-time bugs and monitored for live client-side performance.

We’re not far away from our beta launch now … we’re just building one or two tools to make the application generation even easier. And of course, we’re figuring out how to get the software to the people who need it.

Within the next few weeks a beta version will be launched on the new Habanero site. A free 3-month beta license will be available for the full package, and we’d love to hear back from all the users on how useful Habanero has been and what we can do to improve it. Watch this space!

Chillisoft Blog spreads its web

A month after launching the official Chillisoft website, it’s time for a blog where we can save the world with our technical prowess. As they say, make the young people presidents while they still know everything.

This blog serves two purposes:

  • Provide technical insight - offer solutions or commentary for current IT issues
  • Discuss Habanero - give notice on current developments with Chillisoft’s new Habanero architecture

Feel free to add comments to our articles - as it turns out, we’ve been a bit slow in establishing a monopoly on knowledge - Gantt charts should solve all that :)
