The Trouble with my LCD

Our office has experienced some interesting problems during our transition from CRT’s to LCD’s.  When that shiny new black gadget stands proudly on your desktop where that old clunky thing used to take up 93% of your working space, you feel like you’ve entered a new era.  Unfortunately the world is not quite as hunky dory as we hoped…

How Long Should a Software Trial Last?

While launching our new Habanero ORM framework, we’re having to answer this question: is 30 days enough to trial a piece of software?

Of course, circumstances dictate.  Thirty days may not be enough to trial a Pastel accounting package because you don’t get to see a full month’s financial cycle in operation.  Thirty days for a drawing or flash production package that doesn’t insert a watermark is plenty. Is thirty days enough to play with a software library, especially when the derived products will expire after that period anyway?

Any thoughts?

Will All Software Be Free?

There’s a popular little slogan doing the rounds in some places: “One day all software will be free”.  Who can’t be struck by such a statement?   It’s powerful, very topical and of course contentious depending on your viewpoint.

Plug ‘n Play Development

Having recently developed and launched Habanero ORM, Chillisoft have found themselves walking into a growing phenomenon in development - something I might call “plug ‘n play”.  Simply put, if I was trying to develop a solution several years ago, I’d have one of two paths really: find an existing application that vaguely matched the requirements or go the full distance and craft one of my own.

Creating Demo Videos with Wink

We’ve just added a set of flash demo videos to the Habanero website that demonstrate how the program works.  Demo videos are simply another form of marketing - every customer is won over in a different way, some go straight to the features list, others browse the tutorial, others take a look at the support plans or forums, and others … just download and wing it!

The Power of Deletion

Many of you will know how annoying it can be when you have erroneously entered a web address or username or search term in a textbox and then have that entry prompted back to you for the rest of your lives.  For instance, you type in gogle.co.za into your search bar, then correct it afterwards to google.co.za, but now the drop-down suggestions list keeps showing you gogle.co.za first in the list.

Well, one of our developers (Mark Whitfeld) discovered the simple solution.  Simply navigate down the drop-down list with your arrow keys to the erroneous entry and press the Delete button on your keyboard.  It’s magic!

Habanero Goes Gold

Chillisoft are proud to announce the Gold release of Habanero, an object relational mapping (ORM) framework that provides data persistence between relational databases and object-orientated code.

Those familiar with ORM will know that it’s one of the most promising development innovations in recent years, saving considerable time spent building database connections and writing repetitive Sql statements.

In a competitive market place, Habanero goes one better by generating user interface forms or grids from the objects being mapped. In addition, Habanero can generate mapping definitions from an existing database and then generate the code for the classes to be mapped.

Habanero is available in two editions: Habanero Standard provides free open source ORM, and Habanero Professional is an advanced features edition that provides a GUI xml definitions manager, along with database reverse engineering, code generation and UI generation.
